Views regarding Freedom of Expression

Support/Stand: Reading 3
Freedom of speech is a noble value and is no doubt important. However, it is still essential for the people to maintain a level of self control, take responsibility and set boundaries in the society such that the rest of the population would not be victimised by freedom of expression. This prevents potential discord and harm being inflicted onto others should we "take freedom too far".

Every action causes a reaction. With freedom of expression, people have to accept reactions/protests to their actions, for the principle of F.O.E applies to both parties. Protesters would then be free to vent their anger, whatever the consequences. This would then lead to violence and disruption of social order stemmed from freedom of expression.

We can choose what to believe in or protest against, but bearing in mind that our opinions may not be what others share which is why people should not impose their thinking on others.

Speech is a powerful tool. It can be seen from how words can influence the people, and in some cases, cause psychological trauma and distress to the receiver. The receiver(s) will choose to react in different ways. Some immediately lash back with violent protests while others tolerate. However, mere tolerance is not the solution as everyone has a breaking point. When they reach their breaking point, consequences may be just as dire.

However, if freedom of expression is exercised with perhaps sensitivity towards others and diplomacy, less tension would be felt and people might find it easier to compromise one another in terms of accommodating and accepting other people’s expressions.

So there, PEACE OUT.
